With override mods you simply drop the files in the My Documents\bioware\dragon age\packages\core\override folder, and to uninstall you just remove them. Mods come in two varieties: override and dazip.

It also makes the Family Sword less obsolete throughout the game by increasing it to Silverite. If you like the Human Noble origin another good mod is the "Of Noble Cast" mod on the Nexus, which adds to the experience by starting you in expensive clothing with no weapons, then giving you your own set of personal armour and stuff when the fighting starts, and increasing the number of enemies to compensate. I would also suggest tmp7704's mods on the Bioware website, especially the qunari/kossith update (which seamlessly replaces all qunari with the DA2 style qunari, including Sten, who is the only one who stays hornless), and Shapeshifter Plus. I chose the recommended setting, for a good balance between aesthetics and lore. I would recommend Dragon Age Redesigned, as it replaces most NPC faces in the game to either have more realistic proportions or to fit their character better. There are also a number of good mods on Bioware's social site, in the projects section. The main place to get mods is the Dragon Age Nexus. This subreddit is RES Nightmode Compatible This subreddit and its mods are in no way associated with BioWare or EA.
